This is a new type of food packaging bag made of seaweed instead of plastic, with high nutritional value. Even if it is finally discarded as garbage, it can be biodegraded naturally. The waffle vendor is one of the first customers to participate in the test.
The new package was designed by evoware, an Indonesian start-up. "We want to eliminate plastic waste at the root and create a cleaner world." David Christian, evoware's co-founder, told fast.
In terms of white pollution, Indonesia is second only to China, and the garbage finally attributed to the sea mainly comes from disposable packaging products. Indonesia accounts for 4 rivers with the most serious white pollution in the world. Garbage dumps in Bali tend to overflow.
As a kind of material, seaweed has obvious advantages over oil-based plastics in addition to not producing garbage.
Seagrass can absorb carbon dioxide during its growth. An area the size of a baseball field can grow 40 tons of seaweed a year and absorb 20.7 tons of greenhouse gases.
Unlike other bioplastics, such as corn and seaweed, no fertilizer, water or other resources are needed. Indonesian seaweed farmers are currently in excess of demand and struggling to make a living.
The start-up would not disclose details of the production process, but said seaweed was converted into packaging bags after food safety treatment without using chemicals.
Because the new package is soluble in hot water, the company plans to replace other plastic packages, such as seasoning packets in instant noodles.
In the future, you don't have to open the package any more. You just throw the seasoning bag directly into the noodle bowl and stir it evenly (the package itself is almost tasteless and does not affect the taste of the noodle soup after melting).
It can also be used in the instant coffee that Indonesian people often drink. The company is also preparing edible wrapping paper for hamburgers and sandwiches.
The company is one of six winners of the $1 million award for the circular design challenge.
One of the problems, Christian points out, is that despite the proliferation of plastic waste, Indonesians still don't realize the need to solve the problem.
"The awareness, awareness and urgency of minimizing disposable plastics is still very weak." He said.

The production cost of seaweed packaging bag is higher than that of plastic, but as long as the company transits from trial production to full production, the cost will gradually decrease.

Another winner, algramo of Chile, used recyclable containers to hold goods in local convenience stores.
In the plastic bag category, evoware won alongside Delta, a British company that helps restaurants make sauces stored in edible bags.
There are also two companies that specialize in coffee cup lids: cupclub, a UK recyclable lid ordering company, and triocup, which makes folding cups without a lid. All of the above winners will participate in the one-year accelerator program in 2018.
