The choice of packaging materials directly affects the shelf life of your products!

Vacuum packaging technology, map packaging technology, deoxygenation packaging technology has more and more to meet the market development trend. Food manufacturers not only do a lot of work on the health, nutrition and flavor of products, but also constantly bring forth new ideas in the packaging of food. In addition to the appearance design, it is more exquisite and special. But do you know that different packaging materials and methods, especially barrier performance, will directly affect the shelf life of your products.
From the perspective of food safety, packaging has two functions, one is moisture-proof, the other is anti-oxidation.
1、 Vacuum packaging
Vacuum packaging is the mechanical extraction of air from the packaging before sealing. It is widely used in food industry, such as hot leg, sausage, beef jerky, pickle, bean products, preserved fruit, etc. Take dried bean curd as an example, the only preservatives allowed in the national standard are potassium sorbate and sodium diacetate, but the antifungal effect is not ideal. It is usually combined with vacuum packaging deoxidization to inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms and prevent oxidation, discoloration and taste, thus greatly extending the shelf life. However, vacuum packaging will also have the following problems:
Bag expansion is caused by incomplete sterilization or poor barrier and sealing of packaging materials.
The taste of the product is usually sour, which is caused by microbial reproduction or the transparency of packaging materials and the external environment.
Air leakage is caused by poor barrier and sealing of packing materials.
2、 Map packaging (inflatable packaging)
Many foods, such as bread, cake, meat floss cake, mung bean cake, potato chips, dehydrated vegetables, are not suitable for vacuum packaging because of their fragility and deformation under pressure. Inflatable packaging can not only remove oxygen, quality, compression, gas barrier, but also effectively prevent food from crushing and deformation under pressure, without affecting the appearance of packaging bags and printing decoration. However, the following problems may also occur in inflatable packaging:
The gas is sucked and vacuumed, which is caused by the reproduction of thermotolerant bacteria.
It is caused by microorganism pollution and poor barrier property of packing materials.
Air leakage is caused by poor barrier and sealing of packing materials.
3、 Conclusion and suggestion
1. Packaging material is very important for food preservation, and good barrier (air tightness) packaging materials must be used because there are many invisible pores on the package to exchange the contents with air. The thickness of the composite film is between 60-96 μ m, which requires good heat sealing property and physical and mechanical strength.
Note: Polyethylene (PE) is commonly used as the inner substrate of composite film, and tensile polypropylene (OPP), polyester (PET) and nylon (PA) are commonly used as the outer substrate. Some high-fat foods are best packaged in light barrier, and a thin aluminum foil (AL) can be compounded between the inner and outer substrates,
2. If the chemical preservative can't achieve the ideal effect in some foods, the natural preservative with high efficiency can be used.
