The chemical name of nylon is polycaprolactam, which has two applications: fiber and resin. At present, the industrial production of nylon resin includes nylon 6, nylon 11, nylon 12, copolymerized nylon, polyarylamide, etc. nylon 6 resin is mainly used in packaging. According to its film-forming methods, it can be classified into biaxial tensile film, unidirectional tensile film, UN stretched film, coextruded multilayer thin film or dry composite film.
Biaxially oriented polyamide (BOPA) film, as a high barrier film substrate, is becoming the third largest film family after BOPP and BOPET films.
1 Characteristics and Application

BOPA film has high puncture resistance, impact strength, friction strength, bending strength and good barrier property. In order to overcome the shortcomings of polycaprolactam, which is easy to absorb water and poor stability, it is usually used to composite with the substrate film with good heat sealing property to improve the performance price ratio and water absorption performance.

BOPA film is mainly used in food packaging. For frozen food packaging, BOPA film has the characteristics of high strength, good puncture resistance and cold resistance. For the liquid seasoning packaging of soup noodles, the main use of its high strength, good puncture resistance, especially oil resistance bamboo shoots, mainly using PA6 material, and when the temperature is higher, then zero nylon 66 material. For cooking resistant food packaging, the main use of its oil resistance, heat resistance, good gas barrier, puncture resistance and other characteristics. In addition, BOPA film is also widely used in medical, cosmetics, machinery, electronics and other general industrial packaging fields.
2 market analysis
The research and development of BOPA film began in the 1970s. At present, the production capacity of BOPA film in the world is about 130000 T / A. the main manufacturers are in Japan, including Mitsubishi, Yubu, Asahi, unijike and Diren. In addition, there are a few countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, China and so on.
At present, the global annual consumption of BOPA film is between 110000 T and 130000 t. The consumption of Japan and Europe is about 40000 tons, while that of other Asian countries and regions is less than 30000 tons. Asian market demand is very strong, driven by it, the annual growth rate of global demand for BOPA film is expected to be around 10% in the next few years.
More than 80% of the world's BOPA film is used in food packaging, mainly used for cooking food, frozen vacuum food, fresh meat, cheese, flavor food and cover materials. And BOPA used in food composite packaging is a development trend. The Research Report of pcifilms, a market research company, points out that due to strong market demand and high profits, BOPA film has been over invested recently, and the production capacity will increase to 257 / T / a by 2007, and the global supply and demand of BOPA film will be basically balanced from 2008 to 2009.
China's composite film production began in the late 1980s, and dozens of composite film production lines were successively introduced, and some enterprises used imported BOPA film to produce nylon composite packaging materials. It was not until 1993 that Guangdong Foshan Dongfang packaging materials Co., Ltd. imported two sets of 3000t / a BOPA film lines from Japan, which ended the situation that all BOPA films in China depended on imports, but the resins for BOPA films mainly depended on imports. By the end of 2003, there was only one company in China, Foshan Dongfang packaging materials company, which produced BOPA film.
Due to the strong market demand and relatively high profit of nylon film, many manufacturers have focused on the investment in BOPA film projects in recent two years. Since 2004, more than ten enterprises have planned to invest in BOPA film projects. As of June 2005, there are 7 known BOPA film production lines with a total production capacity of 31000 T / A, all of which are imported technologies. The main production enterprises include Foshan Plastics Group Co., Ltd., Dongfang Branch, Xiamen Changhua Plastic Industry Co., Ltd., Zhanjiang Development Zone Minghe Plastic Co., Ltd., Jintian group Plastics Co., Ltd., etc. It is estimated that more than 10000 t / a capacity will be put into operation by the beginning of 2006. In addition, some enterprises in Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places also plan to enter the market.
Up to now, the domestic market demand for BOPA film has formed 16000-20000 T / A. the market prospect is very good, and the demand will increase rapidly in the next few years. However, with the completion of a number of BOPA production lines, the market competition will become increasingly fierce in a few years.
3 production technology and equipment
There are two kinds of processing methods of BOPA film: flat film method and tube film method. Flat film method includes synchronous drawing method and asynchronous drawing method. Tube film method is also known as blow molding method. At present, synchronous drawing method and asynchronous drawing method are more competitive. Both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the asynchronous stretching method is widely used with low investment. The synchronous drawing method is more advanced, but the investment is higher. The production process includes: melting, cooling, stretching, heat setting, crimping, packaging, etc.
Nylon (BOPA) film manufacturing equipment and technology has been monopolized by developed countries. The main suppliers of production line are Bruckner company in Germany, DMT company in France, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry in Japan, etc. Up to now, biaxial stretching equipment and production lines in China are still mainly imported. In recent years, a few enterprises, such as Xi'an aero-engine company, Guilin Electric Appliance Research Institute and Shantou Far East equipment company, have set foot in this field and manufactured equipment suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises, but there is still a certain gap compared with the world's advanced level.
4 nylon resin special material
The production of BOPA film has higher requirements for nylon resin base, mainly including: (1) the relative viscosity of resin matrix is 3.3-3.7; the viscosity is too high to cause processing difficulty; too low will lead to tensile rupture; (2) the relative molecular weight distribution of nylon slices is uniform, and the relative deviation of the chips can be small enough to ensure uniform molecular force; (3) the content of cyclic oligomers and gel particles is as low as possible. (4) spherulites are easily formed during the cooling and curing process of nylon. If the grain size is too large, it is easy to tear.
At present, there are more than 20 nylon 6 and nylon 66 resin production plants in China. Only a few enterprises with a production capacity of more than 10000 tons are China Shenma Group and Guangdong Xinhui Meida company, and there are more than ten thousand ton enterprises. Due to the shortage of production and demand, the import volume in recent years is between 100000 t / A and 200000 t / A. At present, nylon resin is mainly used in automobile industry, machinery industry, electrical industry and so on, but it is still used in film field. One of the important reasons is the lack of special resins for the production of films, especially biaxial tensile films. It has been reported that Yueyang Petrochemical General plant has successfully developed the synthetic technology of high viscosity nylon special material for biaxial tension and produced nylon special material for packaging film with excellent performance.
5 development suggestions
BOPA film is a promising new type of high-grade packaging material, which is widely used in food, medical, cosmetics and mechanical and electronic packaging fields. It is especially suitable for frozen packaging, vacuum packaging and cooking packaging. The market prospect is very good, and the demand will grow rapidly in the next few years. However, with the completion of a number of BOPA production lines, the market competition will become increasingly fierce in a few years. Therefore, enterprises that intend to invest in the construction of BOPA film projects should do a good job in market research and avoid rushing into mass production and blindly producing.
According to the market analysis and considering the characteristics of plastic film industry, the production scale of a single enterprise should be 10000 t / A. There are two production lines with a single line capacity of about 5000t / A.
The production of BOPA film is very difficult. The raw materials and processing technology are now in the hands of a few foreign manufacturers such as Japan and Germany. And most of these companies have applied for production patents at home and abroad, so it is generally necessary to introduce technology and equipment to build the project in China.
The development of resin production and processing application is complementary. At present, nylon resin (especially special materials) and film processing in China need to be developed urgently.
